Zurich Music Week | Human, machine, or both? AI in electronic music today

On August 5th, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, within the context of Zurich Music Week, Deborah De Angelis will take part in the conference organised by AFEM (Association for Electronic Music) titled “Human, machine, or both? AI in electronic music today”.

The session will explore the role of artificial intelligence in the electronic music landscape, an environment historically closely linked to technological innovation and now increasingly shaped by hybrid human–machine tools and processes that have already become part of the daily practice of many producers and DJs.

The talk will focus on the legal implications of the use of AI in music production, addressing copyright and authorship issues in works generated or co-created with artificial intelligence systems, questions surrounding the use of copyrighted materials for training AI models, and the related mechanisms for remuneration and opt-out rights for rightsholders. The conference will offer a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art at the intersection of artificial intelligence, copyright law, and the music industry, with particular attention to the evolving regulatory and commercial frameworks shaping the electronic music sector.
